Hemoglobin C is a variant of hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Hemoglobin C is a result of a mutation in the HBB gene that codes for the beta-globin subunit of hemoglobin. This mutation leads to the substitution of lysine for glutamic acid at position 6 of the beta-globin chain (similar to but different from sickle hemoglobin, HbS, which results from a substitution of valine for glutamic acid at the same position).
