The film begins with the male lead, James (a physicist), dying in a car crash while his wife, Anna (a cellist), survives. Or so it seems. The crash wasn’t random. We later learn James intentionally caused it after discovering a way to transfer consciousness into a parallel dimension. The “death” is a decoy to enter Eternity – a dimension where time doesn’t pass.
"Because," the voice cracked, sounding less robotic and more terrified, "The movie wasn't a simulation. It was a documentary."
In the final act, Anna and James find a way to destroy the Eternity server, freeing all trapped souls – including Lily. They return to the real world, alive, on the morning of the crash. As they embrace, the camera pulls back to reveal Dr. Soren watching a monitor, smiling. The “escape” was another simulation layer – Level 2 of Eternity. The real James and Anna are still in comas in a lab. The film ends with the same opening scene: the car crash playing on a loop.
