To understand the software, one must appreciate the hardware. Before the M1, synthesizers were generally either specialized samplers or dedicated analog synths. The Korg M1 combined a PCM sound engine (sampled waveforms), a multi-effects processor, a drum machine, and a sequencer into one unit. It was the birth of the "Music Workstation."
